The Foundation
Qusasat
A Summer Camp in Palestine for Young Artists
When Sliman Mukarker from the Power Group, Bethlehem, visited LICAF on a British Council Artivator Fellowship in 2024 the hope was that this might spark a connection between the 2 organisations which would over time lead to some kind of partnership project. However, within just 2 months of the Fellowship we already had an exciting idea for an ambitious project which would reveal the breadth of young talent in the comic art field in Palestine. The project was christened Qusasat (apart from being a beautiful word this means ‘snippets’ so a great fit for an anthology of short comics).

The project was christened Qusasat (apart from being a beautiful word this means ‘snippets’ so a great fit for an anthology of short comics).

Qusasat was a 10-day Summer Camp in Beit Jala just outside Bethlehem in the West Bank which took place in August 2025. Despite being postponed by the occupation we were determined to make it happen and the theme of the camp was agreed on as ‘hope’. It was an intense but joyous camp consisting of 13 young artists from across the West Bank including Bethlehem, Hebron and Ramallah.
The Camp was subject to an open call and we were astonished by the level of interest and talent. More than 130 applications for 13 places! The core idea was to enable cultural exchange so LICAF brought Mollie Ray, one of the UK’s brightest young stars, to the table to run comics creation workshops and the Power Group brought Baseel Nassr, from Ramallah, to run workshops in animation and enable the participants to create animated teasers for each of their comics.
The results are astonishing and we’re now planning for Qusasat Camp 2 for July 2026.

Safaa and the Tent
Diary of a Cartoonist from Gaza Oct 2023-Dec 2024
Created between October 2023 and December 2024, the cartoons – some actually, originally drawn on a tent – offer “some of the most powerful and poignant images to come out of Gaza that are not photos,” in the opinion of cartoonist Joe Sacco. “They are to be found in this incredible collection of Safaa Odah’s drawings.” With thanks to Mohammad Sabaaneh for introducing us to Safaa and Nada Hodali for the translation.

The clamour of the past decades has tended to obscure the everyday lives and unique creativity of Palestinian comic artists and Enter the Mulberry Tree and Fly Free seeks to reveal these unheard voices and experiences.
Curated by one of the leading academics and writers on Arabic comics, George Khoury, together with leading Palestinian comic artist and academic Mohammed Sabaaneh this exhibition brings together work by a surprising and exciting range of groundbreaking comic artists.
