“It isn’t just a title. It’s part and parcel of our wider objectives, to reach out to new audiences and raise the profile and the understanding of the importance of comics for education, inspiration and literacy.” - Julie Tait, LICAF Director

The Young Comics Laureate
Created by Comics Youth CIC, in partnership with LICAF, the Young Comics Laureate role is designed to complement the existing national Comics Laureate. This new role recognises that the future of comics depends on listening to, investing in, and elevating young voices. The inaugural Young Comics Laureate has been chosen, through a public vote, as Mollie Ray.

Young Comics Laureate
Mollie Ray
Championing comics as tools for creativity and resilience
Mollie Ray, from Lancashire, is an acclaimed comics artist whose debut graphic novel "Giant" (Faber & Faber, 2024) tells the story of a family navigating a teenage boy’s cancer diagnosis — a wordless, emotionally charged work inspired by her younger brother’s illness. Beyond her own practice, Mollie has led workshops in schools, SEN settings, care systems, and refugee communities, and collaborated internationally, including in Palestine, to help young people tell their stories through comics.
